چکیده

This is an excellent paper. It identifies factors explaining episodes of high inflation and inflation stabilization in 5 Latin American countries during the postwar period. A central finding of the paper, on which I will focus most of my discussion, is that the majority of the observed episodes of hyperinflation were driven by escape dynamics in inflation expectations, or inflation expectations going out of control. Table 1 summarizes this result. The authors identify seven hyperinflations in the data, of which five are estimated to

The Conquest of South American Inflation

We infer determinants of Latin American hyperinflations and stabilizations by using the method of maximum likelihood to estimate a hidden Markov model that potentially assigns roles both to fundamentals in the form of government deficits that are financed by money creation and to destabilizing expectations dynamics that can occasionally divorce inflation from fundamentals. Our maximum likelihoo...

Shocks and Government Beliefs: the Rise and Fall of American Inflation

We use a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm jointly to estimate the parameters of a ‘true’ data generating mechanism and those of a sequence of approximating models that a monetary authority uses to guide its decisions. Gaps between a true expectational Phillips curve and the monetary authority’s approximating non-expectational Phillips curve models unleash inflation that a monetary au...

On quality bias and inflation targets

This paper studies whether the central bank should adjust its inflation target to account for the systematic upward bias in measured inflation due to quality improvements in consumption goods. We show that the answer to this question depends on what prices are assumed to be sticky. If nonquality-adjusted prices are assumed to be sticky, then the inflation target should not be corrected. If, on ...

Irrational Expectations and Econometric Practice Discussion of Orphanides and Williams, “Inflation Scares and Forecast-Based Monetary Policy”

Athanasios Orphanides and John C. Williams’ excellent conference paper, “Inflation Scares and Forecast-Based Monetary Policy,” contributes importantly to the new and rapidly growing branch of the literature on bounded rationality and learning in macroeconomics. Their paper, like many others, derives interesting and useful theoretical results that show how the introduction of bounded rationality...
